The Feature That Only Exists at an Angle

How the Effect Is Physically Built

The card surface is embossed with a very fine array of parallel ridges, a lenticular structure like the ribbed plastic on a novelty postcard but far smaller. Each ridge acts as a tiny lens. Depending on where your eye sits relative to the ridge, you look at one side of it or the other.

A laser then writes two separate images into the card body through that ridged surface, aiming from two different angles. One image lands on the left flank of every ridge, the other on the right flank. From one viewing angle the ridges hide the second image entirely and you see only the first. Rotate the card and the geometry flips.

Because the marking is done by laser, the images live inside the plastic rather than on it, using the same carbonization process described in laser engraving and tactile text on IDs. There is no ink layer to lift, dissolve, or scrape.

CLI Versus MLI

The two abbreviations get used loosely, but the distinction is real. A changeable laser image holds two frames that swap as you tilt: portrait to date of birth is the classic pairing. A multiple laser image holds more than two, so as you rotate the card you step through a short sequence rather than flipping between a pair.

MLI is more demanding to produce because each additional frame needs its own laser pass at its own angle, with every pass registered to the same ridge array. That registration is the hard part, and it is where imitations fall down first.

Why a Printer Cannot Fake It

A printed image has one appearance. You can print something that looks like a second portrait, and you can print a shimmer that shifts tone, but you cannot print an image that is completely invisible from one angle and completely legible from another, because there is no physical structure separating the two views.

Counterfeits usually go one of two ways. Some skip the feature entirely and hope nobody tilts the card. Others print a faint ghosted second image over the first, which means both are visible at every angle at once, a muddy overlap rather than a clean swap. That failure looks nothing like the real thing once you have seen a genuine tilt. How to Check One Properly

The check takes about three seconds and has a right and a wrong way to do it.

  • Hold the card under a single light source, not diffuse daylight from a window.

  • Watch for a clean handover: one image should go and the other arrive, not blend.
  • Check that the swapped-in data agrees with the printed data elsewhere on the card.
  • Look for crispness. A genuine frame is sharp at its transition, not smeared.

Where Tilt Images Sit Among Other Features

A tilt image occupies a useful middle ground. It is not a covert feature needing a machine, and it is not as widely imitated as a foil hologram. It is a feature anyone can verify with no tools, which makes it valuable at a door where a reader may not be available. Which Cards Actually Carry One

Knowing whether a given design should have one is the whole game. Looking for a tilt image on a card that never had one proves nothing, and missing one on a card that should carry it is a hard failure.
