Security features usually work by being hard to reproduce. Tamper evidence works differently: it accepts that someone may get their hands on a genuine card and try to change it, and makes sure the attempt leaves marks that cannot be undone. The card does not resist the attack so much as record it.

Why Alteration Is the Real Threat
Identity cards are attacked in two ways, and only one of them involves manufacturing. Making a card from nothing is hard and getting harder, so most attackers start from a genuine card instead. When someone alters a real document rather than manufacturing a fake one, the card itself has to be what gives them away. Altering one that already exists is a much shorter path, because the substrate, the printing, and the laminate are all genuine. The attacker only needs to change a few characters, most often a date of birth, or swap a photograph.
That is why the defences cluster around exactly those two things. The date field and the portrait are where value concentrates, so they receive protection that the rest of the card does not.
Delamination Leaves a Permanent Record
To reach the printed layer, an attacker has to get through the laminate. Modern laminates are engineered so that separating them destroys something on the way. The adhesive bonds more strongly than the layers themselves, so peeling tears rather than releases. Patterned adhesive leaves a visible signature across the print when lifted, and any optically variable element bonded into the laminate breaks up rather than coming away whole.
The consequence is that a card can be opened, but it cannot be closed again convincingly. Re-laminating produces edges that do not match the original seal, a surface that reflects differently, and often a slight thickness change detectable by feel. Features That Cross Boundaries
The strongest tamper defence is a feature that spans more than one element, because altering either one breaks the relationship:
- A ghost portrait printed partly over the data block, so replacing the photo disturbs the text and replacing the text disturbs the image.
- Overlapping laminate patterns that run continuously across the portrait edge.
- Microprint positioned so it crosses a field boundary rather than sitting inside one.
- Laser engraving that reaches into the card body, so surface work cannot remove it.

What an Inspector Looks At
Someone checking a card for tampering is not scanning it uniformly. They go to the places where alteration pays, and they look for discontinuity rather than for damage in general:
Around the portrait, they check whether the laminate pattern runs unbroken across the photograph edge and whether the ghost image aligns with the main one. Around the date of birth, they look for characters that sit slightly differently from their neighbours, or a background pattern that stops and restarts. Around the card edges, they feel for separation, thickness, and any lifting at the corners, which is where delamination usually starts.
Why Tamper Evidence Beats Tamper Resistance
Nothing stops a determined attacker with time and equipment from getting into a card. Issuers accepted that long ago and optimized for a different goal: making sure that when it happens, an ordinary person can tell in a few seconds without instruments.
