The second is production itself. The data is correct in the record, but something goes wrong physically: color drift, misregistration between print layers, a laminate bubble, a portrait that prints too dark, or a barcode that encodes correctly but images poorly. Here the record is right and only the artifact is wrong.

Clerical Errors in the Data Block

Data errors are the more consequential category, because they propagate. A misspelled surname is not confined to the card. It is in the driver record, it is in the encoded block on the back, and it will be what comes back when the record is queried.

That is why correcting one is not a reprint request. The record has to be amended first, usually with the same primary documents that supported the original application, and only then does a new card get produced against the corrected record. Production Faults and What They Look Like

Physical faults are usually easier to spot and far easier to resolve. Common ones include:

  • Color casts or density shifts in the portrait, from printer calibration drift.
  • Misregistration, where printed layers sit fractionally out of alignment and fine line patterns blur.
  • Laminate defects: bubbles, lifted edges, or debris sealed under the overlay.
  • Weak or incomplete laser engraving, leaving tactile text that is shallow or uneven.
  • Barcodes that decode on a good reader but fail on a marginal one because of low print contrast.

None of these change what the card says. They degrade how reliably it can be read, which in practice is the same problem from the holder's point of view.

How Central Issuance Catches Faults First

The shift from printing cards at a counter to printing them in a central facility changed the error profile substantially, and mostly for the better.

A central facility runs automated quality checks as part of the line: reading back the barcode it just printed, inspecting the image, verifying laminate adhesion. What Correction Involves

For a production fault, the process is generally straightforward. The holder reports it, the agency confirms the record is correct, and a replacement is issued. Where the fault is clearly the agency's, the replacement fee is frequently waived, though this varies and is not guaranteed.

For a data error, the burden is higher. Documents have to be produced again, the record amended, and in some cases the change verified against federal records before printing. Why a Corrected Card Is a New Card

Nothing gets repaired. A card with a bubble in the laminate is not re laminated, and a card with a misspelled name is not overprinted. Correction always means producing a fresh card, which carries a new document discriminator, a new stock control number, and new issue dates, exactly as any other reissue would.
