A Feature You Cannot See By Design

Most security features announce themselves. A hologram catches light, microprint rewards a loupe, a tactile line rewards a fingertip. A digital watermark does the opposite: it is engineered so that a person looking directly at it notices nothing whatsoever.

Two properties make it useful. The payload is redundant, repeated across the artwork so that a torn or dirty card still yields the data from whatever survives. And it is imperceptible, meaning the design looks exactly as the designer intended, which is why it can be applied to a portrait background or a guilloche pattern without visibly disturbing either.

What Gets Encoded

The payload is small, usually tens of bits rather than a full record, so it holds a pointer rather than a person.

  • An issuer or jurisdiction identifier, confirming which authority produced the artwork.
  • A design generation code, distinguishing one card revision from the next.
  • A short serial or batch reference that can be checked against a production record.
  • A copy-detection pattern that degrades predictably when reproduced.

Why a Copy Breaks It

The security value comes from fragility in exactly the right way. The encoding lives in fine detail at the resolution limit of the printing process, and every reproduction step resamples that detail: scanning quantizes it, compression discards it, and reprinting rebuilds the halftone from scratch with a different screen.

How a Reader Recovers the Payload

Recovery is a software problem rather than an optical one. The device captures the printed area at sufficient resolution, corrects for rotation and perspective, and correlates the image against the expected encoding pattern to pull the bits back out.

Because it is correlation rather than a straight read, the process tolerates a surprising amount of abuse: a scuffed surface, a moderate angle, imperfect lighting. What it does not tolerate is a generational copy, which is precisely the design intent. Limits Worth Knowing

The technique is not magic. It confirms that a piece of artwork descends from a genuine print run; it says nothing about whether the text printed over that artwork was altered afterwards, and nothing about whether the person holding the card is its subject.

It also depends entirely on the verifier possessing the detection scheme, which issuers do not publish. That secrecy is what makes it effective and simultaneously what makes it useless at a venue door, where no one has the software.
